Tuppercabinet – A Success Story

Online stores have made it possible for so many people to buy so many things online – easily. When this happens, some of us tend to run out of storage place to keep all the items bought online. This was what happened to Wai Shee, the Founder of Tuppercabinet back in 2012. She was organizing her store room and found clutters of her Tupperware collection everywhere. She needed a suitable light weight but solid cabinet to keep them all in, she needed a storage system that could fit any small space in her house. That's when the idea kicked in. That's when she started Tuppercabinet. Tuppercabinet is a Malaysian-based company selling Korean Design DIY Cabinet which aims to solve the storage & space issues of many families by offering portable and customized furniture. Their main product that consists of "cubes" can be turned into a wardrobe, cabinet, shoe rack and many more, based on the customer's creativity. Contrary to many start-ups that normally start their business online-first due to limited capital, Wai Shee and her partner actually started up their business with a physical store. After a while, they found themselves to be struggling to keep up with the bills, as the initial start-up cost was huge with stocks and other operating cost, e.g warehouse rental and sales force fees. On top of that, they were only getting low return for the money invested because the market was only limited to her town area. Furthermore, this brand new DIY concept of furniture with attractive colour is very new to the market especially for a small town where she lived. But with determination coupled with faith over her own designed products, they persevered and focused on running their business exclusively online. When asked why she chose to focus on her online store alone, she said "We feel that there are still far great potential for online business as research has shown that online businesses are now blooming and there are more and more people using the Internet for different types of transactions. Hence, we choose not to have physical store by cutting down the operating cost of sales person and other overhead just to serve the local customers, and fully utilize the power of Internet with the goal of bringing our products worldwide," Having to run the business for 2 years now, Wai Shee also mentioned that her quality of life has improved tremendously as soon as she started focusing her business online. Online business made it possible for her to reach even more audience from many parts of the world and her brand name can be discovered internationally. "People know Tuppercabinet because of the ecommerce business that we're running. We live and breathe ecommerce. All of our operational activities rely heavily on online as we communicate with our customers via live chat or email. Without our online store, there will be no us. We will not have succeeded," she added. Recently recognized as the 2nd place winner in the recent Ecommerce Reward Programme organized by MDeC Digital Malaysia, Wai Shee mentioned that it was not always rainbows and butterflies for her. It's always a challenge to continuously get more traffic to her website and to get good customer feedback/rating on her products. To do this, she always make sure that she preps her team to give only the best customer service experience to all her customers. "Being an entrepreneur may not be an easy task but it gives you the satisfaction you cannot find anywhere else. That feeling when your customer get your product, and thank you because you've solved their problem is priceless. Besides, running your own business means you have time freedom, the power of making your own decision without anyone’s intervention and higher returns!" When asked for her advice for new startups who dream to have their own online business and yet find it hard to make the leap, she commented, "Online business may begin slow in the beginning, but with patience, faith and determination, you can do it, and you can do it well!"
